Judith Medina visit through EDUC-WIDE

Judith Medina, a PhD student from Instituto de Materiales Avanzados, INAM, Universitat Jaume I, Castellón de la Plana, Spain, came to the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and CEPLANT Center for a two-day research visit focused on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), working under the guidance of Dr. Monika Stupavská. Her visit was made possible thanks to the EDUC-WIDE project, which fosters collaboration across partners institutions by enabling access to advanced research infrastructure.

Lukáš Vrána and Martin Ondryáš at SVC TechCon 2025

PhD candidates Lukáš Vrána and Martin Ondryáš from the PVDLab, the Deposition of Thin Films and Nanostructures research group at the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and CEPLANT Centrerepresented their research at the SVC TechCon 2025in Nashville, USA, hosted by the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC). Lukáš Vrána earned 2nd place in the Graduate Student Award competition.

Anna Podmanická's achievement at Regeneron ISEF 2025 Global Science Fair

Anna Podmanická, a gifted student from Gymnázium Jura Hronca, secured 4th place at the prestigious Regeneron ISEF 2025 finals in Ohio, USA. Her project on wastewater purification impressed the expert jury and earned her a special award from the King Abdulaziz & his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity. The success of the Slovak AMAVET delegation at this competition was further highlighted by Adam Kovalčík’s overall victory.

Pavel Soucek as a chairman at the ICMCTF 2025 in San Diego

Assoc. Prof. Pavel Souček oversaw a section on High Entropy and Other Multi-Principal-Element at the 51st International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF 2025). He also presented a talked on Temperature Stability of High Entropy Ceramic Cr-Hf-MoTa-W-N Refractory Metal Coatings, showcasing results from a collaborative effort with Stanislava Debnarová, Matej Fekete, Šárka Zuzjaková, Shuyao Lin, Ondřej Jašek, Tatiana Pitonakova, Nikola Koutná, and Petr Zeman.

A weeklong testing of plasma treatment in company Nano Medical

Researchers from the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplicatons research group, Dr. Jakub Kelar and Dr. Oleksandr Galmiz, spent an experimental week at Nano Medical in Liberec. As part of the new OP TAK project, they focused on testing in-line plasma surface modification of substrate materials to enhance the adhesion of nanofibers produced by electrospinning.

Dušan Kováčik participated in the EDUC-WIDE Knowledge Exchange Scheme for Micro and nanotechnology workshop held at the Department of Microsystems, Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge in Norway. The workshop was aimed at exploring research collaboration opportunities with international research teams in the field of nanotechnology. Participants had the opportunity to visit the laboratories and learn about the instrumentation and technologies available at the department.

COLOSSE Training – Using AI tools in an academic enviroment

The training guided participants from the fundamentals of artificial intelligence to critical discussions on AI ethics. Physicists from Masaryk University, the University of West Bohemia, and Comenius University in Bratislava explored how AI can specifically support their work — from research and project preparation to teaching, data analysis, and visualization. This comprehensive program was designed by COLOSSE and delivered by experienced lecturers Lucie Racyn and Vojtěch Velísek from Masaryk University.

Prof. Peter Rogl's talk on X-ray crystallography

The Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and the CEPLANT Centre hosted the INNOLEC Lecture on "Crystal Symmetry and X-ray Crystallography" on 9 and 10 April 2025. Esteemed Professor Peter Rogl, Group Leader of the Christian Doppler Laboratory (CPL) for Thermoelectrics at the Institute of Materials Chemistry & Research, University of Vienna, accepted the invitation of Assoc. Prof. Vilma Buršíková. A series of three consecutive lectures provided the participants with a comprehensive view of the topic of X-ray analysis of the crystal structure of solids.

A highschooler works on wastewater treatment in MUNI laboratories

Anna Podmanická, a high-schooler from Bratislava, worked on her project as part of her high-school professional activity with the support of expert advisors in the laboratories of the Faculty of Science. Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Tomáš Homola from the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and the CEPLANT Centre, her efforts turned into a successful research project that is now receiving well-deserved recognition.

Prof. Grzegorz Greczynski's talk on magnetron sputtering

On the 18th of March 2025, we had the honor of hosting a seminar on “Benefits of metal-ion irradiation for nanostructure and phase control during thin film growth by magnetron sputtering” by the esteemed Prof. Grzegorz Greczynski from Linköpings universitet, Sweden. The seminar, which drew attendees from our university, the Czech Academy of Sciences, PLATIT AG, and Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, led to a rich discussion on magnetron sputtering and XPS, areas where Prof. Greczynski is a world-leading expert.

Sandra Ďurčányová on Erasmus stay at MUNI

Sandra Ďurčányová is a doctoral student from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University. She is on a research stay at DPPT and CEPLANT center of SCI MUNI with the support of the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic. In Brno, she works with dr. Monika Stupavská. In her dissertation thesis, she researches plasma polymerization at atmospheric pressure. Using plasma, she deposits thin functional films made of hexamethyldisiloxane and investigates their properties.

Pavel Souček joined the MU delegation to Taiwan

Assoc. Prof. Pavel Souček is a leading expert in the preparation and analysis of thin films at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. He joined MU’s delegation to Taiwan to discuss the cooperation between Taiwan univeristies and MU. The main goal is to promote the exchange of staff, students and joint research in hi-tech areas.

František Zelenák on Erasmus stay at Slovenia

Our PhD student, František Zelenák, is now on Erasmus+ at the Jozef Stefan Institute in Slovenia, where he is working on the preparation of graphene materials by RF plasma where the carbon is deposited from propane. He tests the prepared samples in supercapacitors. In preparation he optimizes the deposition parameters to prepare supercapacitors with the best properties. As part of his dissertation research in Brno, František also focuses on graphene materials, under the supervision of dr. Richard Krumpolec.

Exploring the potential of plasma-liquid interactions: Leila Zahedi and Pedram Ghourchi Beigi Erasmus+ stay

Leila Zahedi and Pedram Ghourchi Beigi, Ph.D. candidates at the Plasma Nanotechnology and Bioapplication group, Department of Plasma Physics and Technology, stayed four months at the University of Ghent for their Erasmus+ traineeship. They investigated the potential of plasma-liquid interaction for practical applications within the scope of their respective Ph.D. topics.

Dr. Zlata Kelar Tučeková accepted an invitation to join ScienceON - a science stream with experiments. The topic was plasma in physics. With the hosts and other guests ttopics such as nuclear fusion, low and high pressure plasmas, experiments and applications were discussed. Dr. Kelar Tučeková also spoke about the dielectric barrier discharge and its applications. The full stream can be viewed on the herohero platform.

Richard Krumpolec hosted Kingsley Iwu from Nanize

In mid-February 2025, Dr. Richard Krumpolec and Pedram Ghourchi Beigi hosted Kingsley Iwu, the CTO of Nanize AS. New insights into plasma application in the PFAS-free industry were discussed at the beginning of the sixth year of this collaboration with this Norwegian company. Experiments were carried out based on the use of plasma technologies for the activation of various substrates for applications in the coating industry.

Jakub Kelar visits Fraunhofer IAP and IKTS

Jakub Kelar visited Fraunhofer IAP, where he picked up the DCSBD plasma unit installed previously in November 2024. With Přemysl Štastný from CEITEC, they met with Sebastian Spange and his colleagues from Fraunhofer IKTS. They aim to prepare a joint project developing ceramic materials for dielectric barrier discharges. Cooperation on sample testing from both CEPLANT and CEITEC was discussed for the technology scaling-up.

Dusan Kovacik and Zlata Kelar Tucekova represented CEPLANT and the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology at SAPP XXV (25th Symposium on Application of Plasma Processes and 14th EU-Japan Joint Symposium on Plasma Processing), held in Štrbské Pleso in Slovakia in the begging of February 2025. Both talked on atmospheric plasma surface modifications and functionalization.

Prof. Jochen M. Schneider, Chair of Materials Chemistry (MC) at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, visited CEPLANT center and Department of Plasma Physics and Technology on the 14th of January 2025. The visit is a testament to our ongoing collaboration with Deposition of Thin Films and Nanostructures research group, section PVDLab. Dr. Matej Fekete will also be staying at MC from the 19th of January to the 15th of February 2025.

The Dean of the MU Faculty of Science awards prizes to outstanding collaborating organizations, schools, and individuals. One of the thirteen awards was received by Dr. Vjačeslav Sochora from the SHM company. SHM deals with developing, researching, and preparing PVD coatings for components and various tools.

Installation of the DCSBD Plasma Device at Fraunhofer Institute in Potsdam

The installation of the DCSBD plasma device at the Fraunhofer Institute in Potsdam, Germany, is completed. The decision to reinstall the device was based on the positive outcomes from their earlier research. This collaboration is part of the R2R Net Consortium and was supported by Roplass, a spin-off from Masaryk University. The process was coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dušan Kováčik, PhD. and Stefan Kröpke, with the installation handled by researchers Dr. Jakub Kelar and Roman Přibyl.

Richard Krumpolec established a new collaboration with Şişecam, one of the largest producer of flat glass in Europe. The scientists tested the potential of plasma surface treatment on bond strength behavior of an adhesively bonded glass-polymer interface directly at Şişecam Science, Technology, and Design Center.

The 26th ESCAMPIG conference on the physics of ionized gases organized by the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology, CEPLANT center, and the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists was successfully held at the FIT BUT in Božetěchova in Brno. 191 participants from 26 countries from all over the world attended the conference.

Plasma and crop protection

Plasma treatment of seeds offers new possibilities for decontamination and, therefore, seed protection against bacteria and fungi. The research of Assoc. Prof. Pavel Slavíček, Dr. Vlasta Štěpánová and their colleagues investigates the treatment and its functionality. Plasma treatment is suitable for replacing chemical agents that are still used to treat seeds. It can improve germination and suppress unwanted molds, which may affect the seed storability.

Canadian scientist Dr. Jacopo Profili visited the DPPT and CEPLANT Centre

In the last week of January, Canadian scientist Dr. Jacopo Profili visited the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and CEPLANT Centre. Initially a chemistry graduate, Profili is now working in Canada on preparing and modifying materials using gas discharges. As part of the INNOLEC project, he lectured on barrier dielectric discharge and its use in producing organosilicon layers.

Project on functionalized fiber spectroscopy with HAWK Göttingen is halfway through

Scientists from the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplications research group at the DPPT and CEPLANT center investigate new possibilities for sample analysis using LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy). They traveled again to Göttingen, Germany, to further measure LIBS and to discuss plans for future work. The MOBILITY projects rely on reciprocal visits between international partners and their research centers.

Dr. Mateusz Wnukowski from Wroclaw came to CEPLANT and the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology to learn about laser diagnostics in more detail. His research aims to make more effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to the presently used technologies for fuel conversion.

Festival of Science and Technology 2023

The Festival of Science 2023 was held at the Brno Exhibition Centre from 8 September to 10 September, 2023. Around 10,000 visitors had the opportunity to peek into the attractive world of science, technology, and history. CEPLANT and the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology presented their program to the visitors. The Brno Observatory and Planetarium organized the event with the support of the Statutory City of Brno and the South Moravian Region.

New numerical models for the design of ductile hard layers

Dr. Pavel Ondračka is developing new models for simulations of the structure and properties of thin films. Thanks to a MŠMT MSCA project, he went and now collaborates with colleagues at the University of Leoben in Austria. Using his models for the amorphous material tungsten-boron-carbon (W-B-C), it will be possible to predict the mechanical properties of this material, understand its behavior, and find the most suitable composition for hard protective layer applications.

As of 1 September 2023, our hosting institution, the Department of Physical Electronics, has changed its name. The name of the Department of Physical Electronics needed to be revised. The new name is the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology (abbreviation DPPT), and the Czech equivalent is Ústav fyziky a technologií plazmatu (abbreviation ÚFTP).

Digital printing is now a widely available technology. However, the printed materials' size and variety still present a challenge for printers. Not all glass, polymer and Dibond boards, canvases, etc., are suitable for printing. However, atmospheric plasma treatments can also cope with the adhesion of these different materials for UV digital printing.

New diagnostics device RFEA

Since mid-July, our scientists have acquired a new device that extends the current capabilities in process diagnostics of thin film deposition. The RFEA (Retarding Field Energy Analyser) enables the measurement of incident ions with high time resolution, a crucial parameter for thin film deposition using magnetron sputtering.
