There were demonstrations of gas discharges in different gasses with basic information about spectroscopy. The attendees could watch attractive 3D electron microscope images from our scanning electron microscope Mira3 through bi-color glasses. For the smallest of the attendees, the animators prepared puzzles and the pairs game with the photos from our research of plasma science and technology. Older kids attempted to separate Magdeburg hemispheres, a historical experiment from 1654. The experiment demonstrates the power of low pressure. The most eye-catching and engaging was a demonstration of our plasma source – Gliding Arc. The animators introduced plasma as an ionized gas with hints of its scope of potential applications and provided engaging explanations throughout the festival. Physics is attractive to young and old alike.
We will be attending the event again next year. You can look forward to the next Science Festival from 6 - 8 September 2024.
